This programme proposal addresses waste management from a comprehensive academic perspective, with cross-cutting ele-ments of interest to all waste managers and practitioners (policy makers, managers, technicians and researchers), who will eventually contribute to its actions with sustainable waste management in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

With the rapid growth in population, urbanization, economic growth with its consequent
increase levels of consumption, solid waste management has become one of the key challenges
for cities and countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

POSTGRADUATE ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Within the framework of United Nations initiatives such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, and in compliance with their Action Plan, UNEP has launched a process for strengthening its integrated waste management activities. Such activities include creating knowledge and capacities by means of preparing an academic and pilot action programme on waste management in the regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean. In the specific case of the Latin America and the Caribbean region, UNEP made a call for expressions of interest through the Alliance of Latin American Sustainability and Environmental University Networks (ARIUSA, by its acronym in Spanish) with the intention of promoting the creation of a consortium of universities in order to develop an academic master's degree programme on waste management for the region.

Esta propuesta de programa aborda la gestión de residuos desde una mirada académica integral, con elementos transversales de interés para todos aquellos responsables y profesionales de la gestión de residuos (tomadores de decisión, formuladores de políticas, administradores, gestores de residuos, técnicos e investigadores), que finalmente contribuyan en su accionar con la gestión sostenible de residuos en la región de América Latina y el Caribe.
